In May this year we were approached by Active Care Group’s Head of Property and Estates, Josh Worrell. Tough Furniture had been recommended by another care group that we work extensively with. Active Care Group came to us to discuss furniture for their project for converting an existing nursing home in the Kings Norton area of Birmingham into a 32-bed mental health hospital.
The new hospital, which will be known as Kings Norton Hospital, will provide care for men and women with acute mental health needs. In response to the rising demand for adult mental health services in the Birmingham area, Active Care wanted to provide a therapeutic environment for patients.
The project was split into phases with Phase One comprising furniture for 20 bedrooms plus two protective TV cabinets in lounge areas. For the bedroom furniture, Active Care selected items in light elm from our Tough Plus range, specially designed to manage ligature risk. All 20 bedrooms were furnished with an identical bed, bedside cabinet and desk. In addition, each room has been given an open corner wardrobe, a bespoke item designed especially for the Hospital.
All the furniture was manufactured in our factory in Shropshire and fitted to walls and floors by Tough Furniture’s fitting team with delivery, installation and anti-pick mastic taking place at the end of September.
We are now looking forward to working on Phase Two of the project in the New Year. The furniture for this second phase needs to withstand even greater challenges, an area Tough Furniture have extensive experience in.
