Transforming Mental Health Care for Older Adults: The Blossomwood Redevelopment
As part of one NHS Trust’s ambitious programme to eliminate dormitory style accommodation, a transformative redevelopment is underway at King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton in Ashfield. The goal is to bring all mental health wards for older adults under one roof, creating a modern, dignified and therapeutic environment.
A Vision Realised: The Blossomwood Project
Formerly known as Millbrook Mental Health Unit, the newly named Blossomwood was reimagined to offer three purpose-built wards for individuals aged 65 and over. Each ward features single ensuite bedrooms, ensuring privacy and comfort:
-
18 bed dementia ward
-
18 bed mental health ward
-
10 bed flexible use ward for dementia and or mental health needs
Specialised Design and Build
Tough Furniture was selected as the trusted partner to provide specialised furniture for this landmark project. Our role was to ensure that the physical environment supported the Trust’s clinical goals. Every piece, including wardrobes, desks and shelving, was custom designed and precision built to fit the unique dimensions of each room.
The calming light elm finish offers a domestic feel, underpinned by a discreetly robust build that is up to the task of a busy mental healthcare environment. From standard to accessible bedrooms, each space was equipped with durable fitted solutions where safety was the primary directive. By incorporating ligature reduction directly into the design, we ensured a high level of safety within a secure yet non-institutional environment for residents.
Seamless Installation and End to End Support
To ensure the redevelopment met its milestones, the NHS Trust utilised our comprehensive direct-to-site installation service. By providing cabinetry that arrived pre-assembled and using our own team of skilled fitters, we ensured the process was smooth and efficient.
This approach offered a single point of technical contact from initial design through to final fit out, which minimised on site disruption and provided the Trust with the reliability required for a project of this scale. The result is a high specification finish that is purpose built for the long term safety and wellbeing of its patients.
