Tough Furniture have proudly partnered with Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for several years and were honoured to support their £1 million project to create a new CAMHS ward at Berrywood Hospital. The project represented a significant investment in mental health care facilities, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for young patients.
As the principal furniture supplier, Tough Furniture played a key role in shaping the functionality and design of the new ward. Collaborating closely with Fleet Architects and T&B Contractors, Tough Furniture helped bring the project’s vision to life by designing, manufacturing, and installing bespoke furniture tailored to the specific needs of the ward.
Thoughtfully Designed Spaces
In the latest phase of the project, Tough Furniture delivered custom-built furnishings for 10 patient bedrooms, along with an inviting lobby area designed to foster social interaction and relaxation.
Innovative Bedroom Furnishings
Each bedroom was carefully designed to balance comfort, durability, and safety. A bespoke fitted storage and media unit was installed alongside a Tough Plus box bed, offering patients both practical storage and entertainment solutions.
- Smart Storage Solutions: Lockable cupboards and open shelving ensure flexible storage, accommodating personal belongings securely while allowing easy access.
- Integrated Media Features: A polycarbonate-fronted section within the storage unit provides a dedicated space for a television and gaming console, offering recreational opportunities in a safe, controlled manner.
A Welcoming Lobby Space
In alignment with the interior design strategy established by the architect’s practice, Tough Furniture were commissioned to design and install bespoke floor-to-ceiling seating pods in the lobby area. These pods, distinguished by their organic curves and padded seating in carefully curated colours, cultivate a warm and inviting environment that encourages both relaxation and social interaction.
To ensure seamless integration, Tough Furniture maintained a presence on-site throughout the lead-up to manufacturing, allowing for detailed consideration of fixed infrastructure such as built-in heating and lighting. Advanced manufacturing techniques were employed to faithfully realise the fluid forms envisioned by the Architect.
The resulting pods offer comfortable breakout zones where patients can relax, connect with others, or participate in therapeutic activities – contributing to a more supportive and calming space.
A Commitment to Safe, Functional Design
Tough Furniture’s expertise in manufacturing robust, purpose-built furniture for healthcare environments has been integral to the success of this project. The company’s dedication to safety, durability, and thoughtful design ensures that the new CAMHS ward at Berrywood Hospital meets the highest standards of care, fostering a supportive space for young patients on their journey to recovery.
